Description

Group of Orson Welles Magic Routines and Proposed Monologues from Television Appearances (ca. 1970s). Vintage original group of (21) pages relating to magic routines, monologues, and conversation topics for various television talk show appearances made by Orson Welles during the 1970s. Welles was a lifelong admirer and practitioner of magic, having apparently learned his first trick from Harry Houdini in the 1920s. His love of the trade was explored in the 1953 short film Magic Trick as well as an unfinished project entitled Orson Welles' Magic Show, filmed between 1976 and his death in 1985. During this time, Welles was also making appearances on popular network talk shows, including The Johnny Carson Show (NBC TV, 1962-1992) and Dinah Shore's Dinah! (TCF TV, 1974-1980). This collection of papers contains preparation materials and draft routines for those appearances, including monologues related to various magic tricks. 1-page indicates a routine involving Muhammad Ali, while others directly invoke Mr. Carson and Ms. Shore for their involvement in the routines. Several pages are typewritten, others mimeographed, and several containing Welles' handwritten annotations and editing notations. Exhibits signs of use and age associated with personal papers, including folds and creases, edgewear, and bumped corners. Provenance: From the collection of Orson Welles' personal assistant in the mid-1970s, Terry Putz. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.
