Description
BG-130 Jeff Beck Group, Moby Grape 1968 S.F. Poster Signed by Lee Conklin, Graded 9.9. First-and-only printing San Francisco concert poster for the Jeff Beck Group with Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood, S.F.'s Moby Grape and several others playing at the Fillmore West on Tuesday through Sunday nights, April 23-28, 1968. Known as BG-130 in the Bill Graham numbered series, this poster was signed by its creator, Lee Conklin, and graded a near-perfect 9.9 Mint by CGC (the Certified Guaranty Company). This is a busy poster with six different acts spread over a pair of three-day stands at the Fillmore. First up was the Grape, Beck and Mint Tattoo on Tuesday-Thursday; then the weekend featured the Charles Lloyd Quartet, the Herd and the James Cotton Blues Band. Guitar-god Beck, whom we just recently lost, still had yet to release his two FM underground classic albums, Truth and Beck-Ola. Meanwhile, this was the very month Moby Grape released its unusual double album, Wow/Grape Jam on Columbia Records, its only record to reach the national top 20. We also love the way Conklin signed the poster right alongside an alligator, very cool. Measures 14" x 21 1/8" and grades to 9.9 Mint. COA from Heritage Auctions.
More Information: CGC's yellow grading strip at the top signifies this poster is part of the company's Signature Series, meaning Mr. Conklin's signature was executed right in front of one of CGC's representatives, and is even dated as such.
The Charles Lloyd Quartet consisted of Lloyd on tenor saxophone and flute, Keith Jarrett on piano, Jack DeJohnette on drums and Cecil McBee on bass. Lloyd was really keen on crossing over to the rock audience, and succeeded to a degree... the group's 1966 live album, Forest Flower, was an unqualified success and helped build him a non-jazz following. It was recorded by Wally Heider and featured photography by Jim Marshall. The CLQ was rewarded by being voted "Jazz Artist of the Year" by Downbeat magazine in '67.
