THE ULTIMATE JAZZ LEGEND WITH SIGS FROM HIS WHOLE BAND

Louis Armstrong & His All-Stars 1964 Houston, TX Fully Autographed Concert Poster. An original cardboard window card advertising Louis Armstrong and His All-Stars appearing at the Music Hall in Houston, Texas on Monday, May 4, 1964. This was a classic "tour blank" concert poster used by Armstrong and his manager Joe Glaser for at least 13 years, certainly from 1956 to 1968. It featured maximum flexibility for the many personnel changes Satchmo's All-Stars would go through.

Delightfully, this example was fully signed by Satch and his band: pianist Billy Kyle, drummer Danny Barcelona, trombonist Trummy Young, on clarinet & sax Joe Darensbourg, double-bassist (and misspelled) Arvell Shaw, and vocalist Jewel Brown.

Trummy Young really had a time of it, not signing his name but rather "Big Chief," and then doctoring himself up with a headband & feathers, glasses, a mustache and goatee. Billy Kyle more sincerely wrote "A Votre Sante" ("to your health"). Louis himself signed vertically starting after the "G" in his name. Stunningly, Louis' longtime valet Doc Pugh even signed the poster, inside the white "In Person" diamond. As did Satch's personal road doctor, starting right under Louis's head, "Alexander Schiff M.D." Now that's a thorough set of autographs!

Heritage sold this exact poster in 2022 and it realized $5,750. That winning bidder has decided to now move it along. Measures 14" x 22 1/4" and grades to Very Good condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: This remains the only specimen of this poster that Heritage has ever seen. This exact poster was sold by us back in November 2022, and that buyer has decided to consign much of his collection to Heritage here in spring 2024.

One more great anecdote tied to this poster: May 4, 1964 was the exact week that Louis's classic "Hello, Dolly!" single ascended to the #1 position in Billboard magazine, finally knocking the Beatles out of first place, who had been at the top for the previous three months solid.

Condition details: This board has the standard amount of handling, little surface creases, small markings, very tiny pin holes, toning and bumped corners which puts it right down the middle condition-wise. Nothing semi-serious at all, just a lot of those little things.

Heritage Auctions provides as much information as possible but strongly encourages in-person inspection.
