Description
Jackie Wilson, Marvelettes, Lavern Baker & More 1966 Chicago, IL Jumbo Concert Poster. An eye-popping cardboard jumbo window card with vibrant orange, black and white coloring featuring a slew of great R&B acts playing for a week at Chicago's legendary Regal Theatre starting on Friday, March 11, 1966. The poster proclaims "36 Stars!," counting the orchestra members as usual, and seven hit-making headliners are named: Jackie Wilson, The Marvelettes, The Contours, LaVern Baker, Wayne Cochran and the C.C. Riders, The Dells and Tammi Terrell. And don't forget that first-run movie which is always plugged at the bottom of these Chicago boards. Measures 22" x 28" and grades to Near Mint Minus condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.More Information: This remains the only specimen of this poster that Heritage has ever seen. This exact poster was sold by us back in July 2021, and that buyer has decided to consign much of his collection to Heritage here in spring 2024.
Jackie Wilson gets the top slot here which is never surprising; he was truly a master showman of the stage, and an evergreen performer that all others looked up to. Among his all-time greatest hits were "Lonely Teardrops," "Baby Workout" and "(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher."
Then you have Motown's Marvelettes, whose crossover pop hit "Don't Mess with Bill" was still in the national Top 20 this very week. It had been five years since their "Please Mr. Postman" became Motown's very first #1 pop hit. The girls would have a big 1967 as well, with three more Top 10 R& B hits.
The Contours had made a major splash in 1962 with the world-beating "Do You Love Me," so they were always welcome on any soul-music bill. They would have a Top 20 R&B hit later this summer with "Just a Little Misunderstanding" on Motown's Gordy label.
LaVern Baker is a Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Famer who actually had a Top 40 R&B duet hit with Jackie Wilson on the charts right now: "Think Twice." She had torn up the 1950's with Atlantic Records hits like "Jim Dandy," "Tweedle-Dee" and "I Cried a Tear."
Wayne Cochran was known as "The White Knight of Soul" who had played bass for Otis Redding and was a close friend of James Brown. His biggest success was writing the tragedy song "Last Kiss" which was a hit for J. Frank Wilson in 1964; Cochran used to perform it with his C.C. Riders back-up group.
The Dells were a long-lasting R&B group that performed and charted from the 1950's through to the 1990's. Their biggest hit of the 60's was "Stay in My Corner."
And Tammi Terrell was a fresh new face at Motown Records and had just charted her first single for the label. Her career would really take off the following year, however, when none other than Marvin Gaye started recording duets with her, such as the #1 hits "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing" and "You're All I Need to Get By."
Condition details: Has light toning/browning along the top edge and creasing in the upper right corner.
