Description

The Drifters 1959 Boxing-Style Concert Poster w/Ben E. King Singing Lead. An attractive blue, black & white cardboard window card for R&B legends The Drifters in the fall of 1959 when their lead singer was Ben E. King, who sang lead vocals on their hits "There Goes My Baby," "Dance with Me," "This Magic Moment" and "Save the Last Dance for Me." King then went on to a stellar solo career in the 60's with evergreen hits like "Stand by Me" and "Spanish Harlem."

The show took place at the Highlands Club in Guelph (rhymes with "self"), Ontario, Canada on Thursday night, November 12, 1959. And you gotta love those 1950's prices... Advance Admission just $1.50. Poster measures 14" x 22" and grades to Very Good condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: "Rockin' Blues Record Star Parade of '60," the top black vinyl disc reads, taking advantage of the new decade looming. Doc Bagby and his Hammond Organ had nudged the chart on one occasion in '57 and Valerie Carr had a Top 20 pop hit in '58 with "When the Boys Talk About the Girls," but it was the Drifters people came to see.

The window card lists three of their hits: "There Goes My Baby," a #2 national pop hit that summer; "Dance with Me," a #2 national R&B hit that had just been released; and "True Love," another Top 5 R&B hit from that fall whose full title (too long for the poster) was "If You Cry (True Love, True Love)."

Condition details: Has light-pencil writing in the upper right corner, toning throughout the edges, creasing/edge wear in the upper center portion, and corner bumping.
