The Who 1969 Hollywood Palladium Concert Poster Graded 8.5 (AOR-3.65). A very popular Rick Griffin concert poster for The Who appearing at Los Angeles' Hollywood Palladium on Friday night, June 13, 1969. Support acts were Poco and the Bonzo Dog Band. "The Magic Circus Brings You," it says at the top, and then has some of Griffin's characteristic insect art.

Serious collectors know that only the B&W handbill with this art was printed before the concert and used for advertising. Rick himself was reportedly disappointed that his cool art had gone so under-used, so a year or two later he had this colorful version printed up. The Art of Rock thought so highly of it that it received a full page all to itself. This is the first graded example of this poster that Heritage has ever offered. Measures 16" x 22 5/8" and grades to 8.5 Very Fine Plus by CGC (the Certified Guaranty Company). COA from Heritage Auctions.

Literature: See Grushkin, Paul, The Art of Rock: Posters from Presley to Punk, Abbeville Press, New York, 1987, p.274 (illus.).

More Information: This show dates to the very week the Who's landmark Tommy album entered Billboard magazine's album chart, where it would remain for over two years and become a staple of FM rock radio. The band played the entire 17-track album live for the first time on the West Coast at this concert. The show also fell right between two Top 40 hits from that album, "Pinball Wizard" and "I'm Free."

According to the book Anyway Anyhow Anywhere: The Complete Chronicle of The Who 1958-1978 by Andy Neill & Matt Kent (Friedman/Fairfax 2002), attending this show at the Palladium were Janis Joplin, David Crosby, Peter Tork, Cass Elliott and members of the Turtles and Spirit.
