THE DEAD & THE DOORS IN A SMALL CALIFORNIA TOWN

Grateful Dead, The Doors 1967 Santa Barbara, CA Concert Poster Graded 9.2 (AOR-3.46). An original first-printing concert poster for the Grateful Dead, the Doors, UFO and Captain Speed performing in a Dance-Concert at the Earl Warren Showgrounds in Santa Barbara, California (100 miles north of Los Angeles) on Saturday night, April 29, 1967.

This is a perfect example of one of those off-the-beaten-path Art of Rock posters without a famous artist but with the best musical talent and totally cool local, homespun psychedelic art. This piece has been graded 9.2 Near Mint Minus by CGC (the Certified Guaranty Company), one of only six examples that exist with grades 9.0 or higher. Heritage has sold this poster only once before, a year ago offering a 9.8 for which we received $15,000.

Features wild artwork of a deep-sea diver surrounded by plenty of rolling psychedelic lettering, including the clever wordplay "At 8:00 The Doors Will Open." Poster artist John Cushing told Heritage this is the only concert poster he ever designed for local promoter Jim Salzer. Cushing gave a nod to the San Francisco scene up north but putting in tiny lettering at the bottom, "Lights by the Family Cat." Measures 17" x 22 5/8". COA from Heritage Auctions.
