CAN YOU SPOT THE SKELETON & ROSES IN RICK GRIFFIN'S ARTWORK?

FD-79 / FD-D1 Janis Joplin/BBHC 1967 Denver, CO Poster Signed by Rick Griffin, Graded a Unique 9.8. A first-printing Family Dog concert poster for Janis Joplin fronting Big Brother & the Holding Company, Blue Cheer and Eighth Penny Matter playing at the FD concert venue known as 1601 West Evans Street in Denver, Colorado on Friday and Saturday nights, September 8 & 9, 1967.

Known as FD-79 or FD-D1 in the Family Dog numbered series, this poster was designed by Rick Griffin and has been signed by the master in his highly stylized signature in the lower right. And then this double-sized gem was graded to a whopping 9.8 Near Mint/Mint by CGC (the Certified Guaranty Company). This is the single highest-graded copy of this first printing signed by Rick Griffin that exists; no other 9.8's or higher, signed by Rick, have been certified by CGC, so this is a population 1/1.

Griffin drew an amazing collage of characters to anchor this poster, rolling out the carpet for the San Francisco scene into the Mile-High City. You see a stoned Indian, the skeleton & roses, Smokey the Bear, the Sin Dance snake lady, Mr. Peanut, Elsie the Cow and all assorted & sundry pop-culture references in his center drawing. The Art of Rock book thought so much of this poster's artwork that they gave up 2/3 of a page for it (on page 100), something they almost never did. Only this poster and Sutters Mill (FD-62, also in this auction) received that special treatment in their Family Dog section. Nicknamed "Denver Opening," this poster measures 27 7/8" x 19 3/4".
