Description

BG-30 Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Paul Butterfield 1966 S.F. Concert Poster Graded 9.8. First-printing San Francisco concert poster for the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane and the Butterfield Blues Band (with the latter headlining) performing at the Winterland ballroom on Friday and Saturday nights, October 7 & 8, 1966. Designed by Wes Wilson, this poster is known as BG-30 in the Bill Graham numbered poster series and was graded a supreme 9.8 Near Mint/Mint by CGC (the Certified Guaranty Company).

Wes Wilson's exceptional design including superlative coloring really carries this poster, not to mention the presence of three headliners and no filler. This robust bill couldn't have fit into the Fillmore, it had to play the larger Winterland. Measures 11 7/8" x 24 3/8". COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: This was the last full weekend of shows for the Airplane with original member Signe Anderson in the band; she would be replaced by Grace Slick in the middle of the following weekend (BG-31 poster). Meanwhile, the busy Dead played a benefit at Mt. Tamalpais (Peace/Winnie the Pooh poster) on Saturday afternoon between these Winterland shows. And the poster's headliner (Butterfield) had just released their classic East-West Elektra Records album which entered Billboard's album chart on October 8, the Saturday on this poster.
