Description
BG-27 Mothers w/Frank Zappa 1966 Fillmore Auditorium Concert Poster Graded 9.8. First-printing San Francisco concert poster for the Mothers (of Invention, w/Frank Zappa) and Oxford Circle playing at the Fillmore Auditorium on Friday, September 9, 1966, and then the following night at the Scottish Rites Temple. Features a handsome combination of orange & purple colors, just like Graham's BG-13 Lenny Bruce poster had a couple of months earlier. This poster was designed by perhaps the most unsung of all early Graham poster designers, John H. Myers, who actually did several for the promoter. Known as BG-27 in the Bill Graham numbered series, this poster measures 14" x 20" and was graded a sterling 9.8 Near Mint/Mint by CGC (the Certified Guaranty Company). COA from Heritage Auctions.
More Information: Frank Zappa was the heart & soul of the Mothers of Invention, of course, and in the poster's photo he's raising his arm in very much a leadership pose. The ensemble's debut album, Freak Out!, had been out just a couple of months. Opening act Oxford Circle would move over to the Avalon Ballroom the following weekend and play with the Grateful Dead, becoming forever immortalized as the only other band listed on the famous FD-26 Skeleton & Roses poster.
A most unusual situation and wording is found on this poster, in that Graham explains very prominently, "Notice! Out of respect for the religious services in the temple next to the Fillmore Auditorium, Saturday night's dance will be held at the Scottish Rites Temple." Make of that what you will.
