Description

Louis Armstrong 1940 Salem, NH "The Trumpet King of Swing" Concert Poster. An original cardboard window card advertising "The Trumpet King of Swing," Louis Armstrong himself, in person at Canobie Lake Park in Salem, New Hampshire on Friday evening, June 28. This date "calendars out" to 1935 or 1940, but we believe the design leans more toward 1940. Features a lively artistic rendition of Satchmo's smiling face during the peak of the swing era. Decca Records gets a mention on the poster, as does his famous manager, Joe Glaser. Measures 13 7/8" x 22" and grades to Very Good condition. From the David Swartz Concert Poster Collection. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: It's not a condition issue, but it's interesting to note how the verso of this poster has a stronger "back print" (from the board printed just before it) than one is used to seeing.

Condition details: Has the typical rough-edged feel and wear & tear one expects from a poster of this vintage. There are two pin holes in every corner, plus thumbtack holes with halos in the top center (on the "L") and bottom center (on "Rockwell"). Both upper corners have one-inch diagonal creases that flirt with the letter closest, but don't cross over into them. Bottom corners also creased but don't come near the orange. There's an edge ding right by the upper right corner of the orange block (near "28"). The verso has a small number written in pencil at the top.
