Description
Janis Joplin/BBHC 1968 Grande Ballroom Poster Signed by Gary Grimshaw, Graded 9.8 (AOR-3.141). An original first-and-only-printing concert poster for BBHC with Janis Joplin appearing at the Grande Ballroom in Detroit, Michigan on Friday and Saturday nights, March 1 & 2, 1968. This poster was designed by the highly respected Gary Grimshaw, who also hand-signed this specimen. It was then given the awesome grade of 9.8 Near Mint/Mint by CGC (the Certified Guaranty Company).Big Brother's classic album Cheap Thrills had its genesis at these two shows, both recorded by Columbia Records and producer John Simon to kick off their attempts to make that release a live album, which ultimately failed. However, the deluxe CD edition of Cheap Thrills includes two tracks recorded at these shows: "Magic of Love" and "Catch Me Daddy." Measures 13" x 22" and grades to 9.8 Near Mint/Mint. From the David Swartz Concert Poster Collection. COA from Heritage Auctions.
Literature: See Grushkin, Paul, The Art of Rock: Posters from Presley to Punk, Abbeville Press, New York, 1987, p.299 (illus.)
More Information: Opening acts consisted of the MC5, Pink Peech Mob, Tiffany Shade and Family Dumptruck. This weekend was presented by the late Russ Gibb, the legendary Detroit promoter. "Uncle Russ" was as important to Detroit's rock-dancehall scene as Bill Graham was to the Fillmore Auditorium and Chet Helms to the Avalon. Gibb also had a huge ace in the hole with the talents of legendary poster designer Gary Grimshaw.
