Description
BG-81 Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane 1967 Hollywood Bowl L.A. Concert Poster Graded 9.8. First-printing concert poster for the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane and Big Brother & the Holding Company with Janis Joplin playing at the famed Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, CA on Friday night, September 15, 1967. There couldn't have been a stronger San Francisco talent line-up during the Summer of Love than the trio holding down this poster - with no filler opening acts. Known as BG-81 in the Bill Graham numbered series, this poster was graded a star-studded 9.8 Near Mint/Mint by CGC (the Certified Guaranty Company). Measures 14 1/8" x 21 1/4". COA from Heritage Auctions.More Information: Designer Jim Blashfield used S.F. Victorian-era architecture as his motif, anchored by one of Herb Greene's well-known photos of the Airplane. "Bill Graham Presents the San Francisco Scene," it says at the top, just as it had on the BG-74 Toronto poster earlier this summer.
For whatever reason, Janis and Big Brother did not make it down south for this show. That's OK, the concert was mainly being carried by the Airplane's Surrealistic Pillow album nestled in the national Top 5 this week and the band coming off their two smashes, "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit."
The Grateful Dead were on a road trip at this moment. They had played Seattle the week before and then flown to Los Angeles to explore recording their second album with producer Dave Hassinger, which didn't pan out. Then after this Bowl show, the group flew to Denver, Colorado to help the Family Dog open their new ballroom there.
Poster-designer Blashfield was mostly known as a multi-media artist and went on to make his name by creating MTV-era music videos for Michael Jackson, Joni Mitchell, Talking Heads, Tears for Fears, Paul Simon, Peter Gabriel and others.
