Description

Raiders of the Lost Ark angel figure from the lid of the Ark of the Covenant. (Paramount, 1981) Vintage original ornamental "Cherubim" figure constructed of cast solid resin with metallized gold plate surface and measuring 9 x 17 x 6 in. In the landmark first entry in the Indiana Jones franchise, Nazi enemies are seeking the title artifact, the Ark of the Covenant, and "Indy" is racing to find it before they can get their sinister hands on it. Legend tells that after the Ten Commandment tablets were smashed by Moses, the pieces were collected in the Ark of the Covenant, a gold-gilded wooden chest constructed according to design given directly to Moses by God, who was said to have spoken with Moses, "from between the two cherubim" ornamenting the Ark's lid. This is one of the 2-instantly recognizable cherubim that sit perched, facing one another, atop the movie's Ark. The kneeling and bowed figure extends her wings forward, an elegant sentry hovering over the ark and defending its contents. While the Ark is central to the entire plot of the adventure, it is also an unforgettable icon in the final climactic scene when the Ark is opened by the Nazis who unleash a hell storm of demon spirits that decimate the entire platoon, while "Indy" and "Marion" (Karen Allen) protect themselves by averting their eyes, in one of the most spectacular scenes of face-melting justice ever committed to film. Beneath the base there is scuffing to the finish with 3-nubs (each with central screw hole showing wear), to mount to the lid of the Ark prop. In vintage very fine condition.
