Description

Sarah Vaughan 1962 Tivoli Theater, Chicago Jumbo Concert Poster. A lovely black & yellow cardboard window card for "The One... The Only... The DEVINE Sarah Vaughan." And for once, that's not hyperbole. This was for a week-long engagement at the Tivoli Theater in Chicago, Illinois commencing on Friday, May 25, 1962. Measures 22" x 28" and grades to Near Mint Minus condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: Just imagine seeing the supreme hall-of-fame talents of Ms. Vaughan singing, and then have "the funniest woman in the world" opening up for her. Such was the case with Moms Mabley being second-billed. Hey... at this point, Moms already had three of her comedy albums land in the Top 40 of Billboard's album chart! And Peg-Leg Bates rounded out the bill. Interesting to note that they used the alternate spelling of "Vaughn" on the poster with Sarah, a common mix-up.

This poster was discovered and liberated from a small grouping of Chicago and Regal Theater vintage window cards. Thankfully they were stored well.

Condition details: The board has a ding on the edge to the direct left of "One." The ¾" vertical mark caused a tear in the top layer of paper. The top left corner has a super-mild and almost indistinguishable surface crease. There's a one-inch vertical crease above the "I" in "Tivoli," with a little bit of light scuffing to the surface right under it. There's a very light ¾" sticky spot right under the "RE" in "Screen," to the direct right of the printer's bug. And there's a very light line extending from "With" above "Swingin'" through Peg-Leg's chest and the "PE" of his name. It's not a cut, not a scratch and not a pen or pencil marking, it was just caused by something dragged across the poster, but it's mostly visible only when tilting the poster at an angle to the light. There's also a very light hairline scuff in the first "E" of "Revue" to the left of Moms' picture.
