Description
Charlie Parker, Monk & Rollins 1954 Town Hall, New York Concert Poster. A small but totally original 67-year-old B&W concert poster for saxophone legend Charlie Parker headlining "Great Moderns in Jazz" at New York's Town Hall on October 30, 1954. At this point, Mr. Parker had less than six months to live. Made on cardstock, this item measures 8" x 13 1/2" and grades to Very Good Minus condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.More Information: Promoter Bob Reisner wasn't being modest when he had the poster label his concert a "fabulous history making musical event." Check out the line-up: Parker, Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins, Art Farmer, Horace Silver, Jimmy Raney and Hall Overton.
This item, and a couple others in this auction, actually came from Mr. Reisner's estate years after he passed away in the early 70's. And it was via the old-fashioned way... his heirs simply cleaned out his files and took them to an established flea market in New York City, where the first few lucky patrons to stumble across them took home some real treasures, including original vinyl pressings. Reisner owned and ran the Open Door jazz nightclub.
Condition details: Missing paper in 4-5 places along the top, but no black or print was taken away. Small missing piece in lower right corner as well. A one-inch tear extends from the upper left corner down to touching the "J" in "Jazz," but not going inside. Odd-shaped, two-pronged tear on left edge that extends into the "H" in "Here" but not into the "C." Surface dot of foreign material to the left of "Horace." Half-inch edge tear to the right of "Hall" and likewise a quarter-inch one to the right of "Shop." All of the black is framed in light brown, which is a dead giveaway that this piece was once framed at those edges, leaving evidence we sometimes call "frame burn," pretty innocuous in the scheme of things.
