Description

Male and Female (Paramount, 1919), Pair of Costume Sketches for Babylonian Sequence by Mitchell Leisen. Vintage original (2) costume sketches of The King's Favorite (Bebe Daniels) and Lord Crichton/The Babylonian King (Thomas Meighan) in black and silver period outfits by Mitchell Leisen, who is credited as costume designer specifically for the film's Babylonian "dream" sequence. Executed in graphite, gouache, ink and watercolor, (1) on 11" x 8.25" artist's paper and (1) on 7.75" x 9.25" artist's paper partially glued to 10" x 12" backing, and both are signed by Leisen. Extremely faint trace remains (in graphite only, before coloring) of Leisen reworking Daniels' pose slightly. Exhibits production and exhibition handling and wear, with age toning and mount adhesive remnants on one verso. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.
