Description
Alice Cooper / Canned Heat / Dr. John 1971 Indianapolis Concert Poster. A very scarce vintage concert poster for five significant rock acts playing at the Indianapolis Fairgrounds Coliseum on Friday, December 10, 1971. Alice Cooper tops the bill and received a great artistic rendering as the poster's centerpiece, looking elegant, androgynous and ghoulish all at the same time. He was out to support the newly released Killer album.Under Alice were boogie-blues legends Canned Heat, New Orleans' Dr. John the Night Tripper and Columbus, Ohio's Pure Prairie League, three months before their first album came out.
And it's interesting to see the presence of REO Speedwagon bottom-billed here. They hailed from Champaign, IL, just two hours away. REO's self-titled debut album had just been released a few weeks earlier, but never came close to charting. A decade later, their album Hi Infidelity would go 10x platinum and top Billboard's album chart for 15 weeks. Good thing they rode the storm out.
Poster originated from the show's promoter, Roger Abramson. Measures 14 ½" x 22 ½" and grades to Very Good condition, but does have a bold two-foot diagonal crease starting in upper left corner, extending down through Cooper's legs and dissecting "Fairgrounds" and the ticket info. The two upper corner areas also have significant creasing, and the bottom left corner less so. Pinholes in the top two corners only. COA from Heritage Auctions.
