Description
Return of the Jedi (Del Rey, 1983), Author James Kahn's Handwritten Manuscript of the Novelization. Original handwritten first draft of the film novelization of the then-titled Revenge of the Jedi, composed in an 8.5 x 11" Mead spiral notebook and signed by the manuscript's author, James Kahn. A must-have item of behind-the-scenes Star Wars lore, this one-of-a-kind manuscript includes unique elements not seen in the final film. As written here, Luke kills Emperor Palpatine-a plot point drawn from the 6/19/1982 production script Kahn used as source material, predating the final filmed version where Darth Vader performs the act. Among other exclusive content is a two-page scene in which Princess Leia recalls being tortured by Vader in A New Hope-a moment later cut due to its intensity. Written during her captivity by Jabba the Hutt, the monologue adds rare psychological depth to Leia's arc. Also included is Kahn's original backstory making Obi-Wan and Uncle Owen brothers, as well as a powerful six-page scene from Vader's perspective as he is dying, reflects on his past, and finds redemption through his son Luke. This manuscript was begun on 7/19/1982 and completed by 8/13/1982, totaling 239- handwritten pages, plus 32- additional pages of loose-leaf inserts for a second pass. Entirely handwritten with remarkably few revisions, the manuscript is a testament to the skill, clarity of vision, and emotional insight of James Kahn as both a storyteller and a novelization author. Alongside Lot 49001, this notebook illustrates how the movie's screenplay was reinterpreted and deepened through Kahn's prose, especially in his exploration of Leia and her father, Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader. A must-own item for fans of the original trilogy, readers of its literary adaptations, and admirers of James Kahn's incomparable contributions to the Star Wars universe. Photos and further information about the manuscript are featured in Kahn's new book, My Jedi Memoir: A Double Life, available from BearManor Media or Amazon. Author James Kahn will personally inscribe a copy of his memoir to the winning bidder. The notebook exhibits signs of age and use, particularly on the front cover which is separating from spirals, with bumped corners, edge wear, and scuffing consistent with its extensive handling during the writing process. Provenance: From the author, James Kahn. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.Heritage Auctions provides as much information as possible but strongly encourages in-person inspection.
