Description
Rocky (United Artists, 1976), Sylvester Stallone "Rocky Balboa" Group of (4) Plaster Swollen Eye and Cheek Molds Made by Michael Westmore. Vintage original group of (4) plaster molds of Sylvester Stallone's face, used by makeup artist Michael Westmore to create the swollen-eye appliances worn by Rocky Balboa during the climactic title fight against heavyweight champion Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) in the first Rocky film. Each mold is marked to distinguish their specific use, ultimately making Stallone's face swollen during the fight sequences. (1) cast measures approximately 3.5" x 5.5" x 9.5", features two halves that fit together, and is labeled "3" in ballpoint pen with the Roman numeral "III" at the top. (1) round mold measuring 3.5" x 6" is for a swollen cheek and is marked "LERT" and "LXX." The remaining (2) molds are half-face impressions labeled with the Roman numerals "I" and "IIII." Rocky was Westmore's first movie, made on a shoestring budget that required him to develop creative, low-cost effects he could apply himself. Seeing how a boxer's face swells during a fight, he designed a series of appliances cast from Stallone's face to depict Rocky's escalating injuries. These were applied in sequence throughout the film, culminating in the iconic scene where blood spurts from an appliance as Rocky says, "Cut me, Mick!" Westmore later collaborated with Stallone on the rest of the Rocky and Rambo series. These molds exhibit production wear, with some light crumbling and cracking within the plaster exteriors, but the interior facial impressions remain remarkably well preserved. With additional tape loss and 1 of 2 molds exhibiting loosening. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.
