Description
Beatles - John Lennon Twice Inscribed Walls And Bridges Album (Apple 3416, 1974). This rare copy of Walls And Bridges bears inscriptions by John Lennon on both the front and back covers. Recorded and released during Lennon's "lost weekend" separation from Yoko Ono, it was also one of his most successful solo recordings. The lively Elton John duet "Whatever Gets You Through The Night," was the only number one solo single that John would see in his lifetime. The album was very strong musically and it too went to number one, his second full-length chart-topper after the Imagine LP. John's companion and close confidante through this period, May Pang, played an important role in the making of Walls And Bridges and is credited as Production Coordinator in the liner notes (and it is Pang who is heard whispering "John" on the second single from the LP, "#9 Dream").The first inscription appears in bold blue ink on the front cover and is a rare caricature of John and May done in John's hand, with the caption "J & M" just below. John has taken the time to add hair to both, where many of his caricatures show only facial features.
The second inscription is in blue ink on the back cover, and is truly special for both the detail and event which is commemorated. It appears to have been affixed to the LP by John at the time when the album went to number one, which was the week of November 16th, 1974. At the top, John has written "As it happened!" with a bold underline, followed underneath by a large full signature and smiling caricature of himself, and below that he wrote and encircled "#1", and dated it "Nov 74". This is not just a great example of a John Lennon signature; it is a time capsule into a unique career moment, and is a true expression of his pride in accomplishment as a musician!
The sleeve is in Very Good condition, with some edge wear and a slight loss to one of the corners of the middle folding section of the cover. The original booklet and inner sleeve are included and are also in Excellent condition, with a single tack hole through the top of the booklet. The LP is EX 7. COA From Heritage Auctions.
