Description

The Magic Christian (1959, Novel), Terry Southern's Onion-Skin Personal Carbon Copy of Chapter 2, Correspondence, and Other Related Writings. Vintage original group of manuscript pages from The Magic Christian written by author and screenwriter Terry Southern, including (1) 6-page section of original typed and corrected material from Chapter 2, typed on 10" x 8" carbon/tracing paper. Southern made edits in pencil and red pencil, including the note "amusing little chapter being written to new definitive edition." Comparison with the 2019 edition confirms many of these revisions were retained, with some material likely added later. Also included are (16) pages of typed correspondence with Lee Wilder, a Los Angeles record shop owner Southern affectionately called a "groovy chick." Written from Geneva, Paris, London, and Dallas, these letters reflect his mindset after The Magic Christian and include his declaration to "devote my life to CREATIVE WRITING." Each is signed "Terry" and offers insight into a pivotal creative period. The lot also includes (1) folder containing 20 screenplay pages from The Magic Christian with handwritten corrections by Southern. Pages include 57-59 on rounded British shooting script paper, page 111 typed on the back of Chateau Marmont stationery, and pages 112-126 on standard typing paper. Many pages exhibit wrinkling, creasing, yellowing, light tears, and bumped or crumpled corners. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions. From the Collection of Terry Southern.
