Description

Miles Davis, Modern Jazz Quartet "Birdland 56" Paris, France Concert Poster. An original thin-paper concert poster for several jazz greats playing two evening shows at the Salle Pleyel venue in Paris on Friday, November 2, 1956. "Birdland 56" the four-color poster proclaims, and the short but stunning talent lineup consisted of Miles Davis, the Modern Jazz Quartet, Bud Powell and Lester Young, the favorite saxophonist of Billie Holiday. What a prolific year it was for Davis... in 1956 he recorded what became Cookin', Relaxin', Workin' and Steamin' for Prestige Records, plus part of 'Round About Midnight for Columbia. A charming design on a poster that you may not see again for 10 years, if that. Measures 15 3/4" x 23 3/4" and grades to Very Good condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: There's a hole in the artwork at top center right above the "E" in "Salle," about ½" tall. All other tack holes are in the white margins only: One in upper left corner, three in upper right, one in lower left, four in lower right and one in the bottom center right below "J. B-L." Lower left corner has some strong vertical creasing, longest one 2 ½", but entirely in the white and nothing touching the black or yellow. Lower right corner has just one gentle vertical crease that also doesn't touch the black. Otherwise just the standard light surface creasing from handling over the decades. General toning throughout.
