Description

Louis Armstrong 1950 New Hampshire Fully Autographed Concert Poster. An original cardboard window card advertising Louis Armstrong and his All-Star Esquire Combo performing at the Pavilion in Alton Bay, NH on Saturday, August 19, 1950. The poster has been signed by Satchmo and every member of his combo: pianist Earl "Fatha" Hines, trombonist Jack Teagarden, clarinetist Barney Bigard, bassist Arvel Shaw, drummer Cozy Cole and vocalist Velma Middleton. A lively red, black, yellow and white concert poster from the mid-century point after World War II. This year saw the release of two Top 30 hits on Decca Records for Louis: "La Vie En Rose" with Earl Hines on piano, and a duet with Ella Fitzgerald on "Can Anyone Explain? (No! No! No!)." Measures 14" x 22 1/8" and grades to Very Good Minus condition. COAs from Roger Epperson and Heritage Auctions.

More Information: The board has six thumbtack holes and circular impressions, three across the top and three across the bottom (both corners and in the middle). In addition, bottom center has a small set of two staple holes, which fall in the white under "Records." The venue-change "Pavilion" strip at the top is somewhat worse for the wear, with crinkling from moisture, a small tear in the "L," a bent up lower left corner, and in the middle a strong brown halo (on the "I") from the thumbtack. Has the usual bumped and creased corners, but nothing bad. Has a scribble of black ballpoint pen in two places to the right of "P.T.," surely done while one of the musicians tried to get the pen to work. Since that pen was problematic, a few of the autographs suffer, especially Velma Middleton. Arvel Shaw, Cozy Cole and Barney Bigard also had ink run out during their autographs. Satchmo himself seemed to really have a problem, going over his twice, once in blue and once in black. The white background gave him good contrast, but it only accentuates the problem he had getting a working pen.
