Description
Stevie Ray Vaughan/Blackbird 1972 "Silver Surfer" Austin, TX Concert Poster. An original silkscreened cardboard concert poster for blues guitar great Stevie Ray Vaughan's early group Blackbird, playing at the South Door Saloon in the Texas state capitol for a six-day engagement from September 4-9, 1972. A rare, famous and popular design called "Silver Surfer," the artwork by Robert Burns depicts a blackbird doing just that.Blackbird concert posters are few and far between, and highly coveted by collectors. There were many more posters made for the Cobras, another 1970's SRV band, than there were for Blackbird, the band Stevie formed when he was still in high school. It's been well-documented that only 100 silkscreened prints were made for each of artist Robert Burns' popular Blackbird posters, and they seldom come up for sale half-a-century later. Rock-music collecting had not gained much traction yet, so the posters were seemingly only saved for their artwork appeal, by those in Austin and surrounds. One SRV collector's site estimates there may only be half-a-dozen of this one still surviving. A first-time Heritage offering, this board measures 14" x 22" and grades to a very impressive Near Mint Minus condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.
More Information: Robert A. Burns - whose last-name signature is printed under the "D" of "Blackbird" – was schooled at the University of Texas. He went on to become an art director and production designer in the movie business. His work is well-known in the horror genre, including motion pictures such as The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Re-Animator and The Howling. (Burns passed away in 2004.)
Condition details: The good news is, the artwork portion if flawless & perfect. Two of the four corners are slightly dinged; the other two are rounded. There are edge dings creating "paper pushes" and indents in the board's edge at the top above the second "B" in "Blackbird," equally below "Ford" at the bottom, and twice more in somewhat smaller form below "1523." The poster's top edge in the upper right has a two-inch long crease right along the edge. All minor edge stuff.
