Description
"There's no place like home..."
The Wizard of Oz (MGM, 1939), "Dorothy Gale's"
Screen Used Kansas Home Front Parlor Screen Door. Vintage
original wood framed decorative screen door visible in the scene
when Miss Gulch (Margaret Hamilton) arrives to the home of Uncle
Henry (Charley Grapewin) and Auntie Em (Clara Blandick) with the
sheriff's order to seize Dorothy Gale's (Judy Garland) dog Toto.
This door is from the interior set of Dorothy's home which differs
slightly from the screen door of the exterior set seen flying away
as the tornado approaches the house. Following its use in The
Wizard of Oz, an MGM Studios set carpenter took the door from
the set and installed it on his Culver City home where it remained
until the early 2000's. The 80.5" x 42" door has been repainted
several times over the decades. The white paint exhibits crackling
in the finish due to age and exposure to the elements and features
red dowel "spurs". Retains vintage hinges with metal handles on
both sides and a latch hook on a single side. The door and paint
exhibit weathering, with previous holes where a door closer was
installed post-production. The screen exhibits several holes and
fraying. An extraordinary and elegant surviving piece from
Dorothy's Kansas home. Comes with a COA from Heritage
Auctions.
