"Those slippers will never come off..."

Bill Mack Painting of The Wizard of Oz Ruby Slippers on a Metal Panel of the Original Hollywood Sign. The amalgam of two icons that changed not only the world of popular entertainment but also charted a course for popular culture in the 20th century. For this extraordinarily unique piece, world-renowned artist Bill Mack used as his canvas metal facing from the original 1923 "Hollywood" sign that was taken down in 1977, stored for 30 years and purchased by Mack in 2007. The panel was restored to carefully preserve the patina resulting from decades of exposure to the elements, including paint fade, rust and other defects. The artist underpainted the image in acrylic and finished it in oil. When completed, the paint was aged with an oil base toner and preserved with a clear urethane. The striking image features a dramatic close-up of the Wicked Witch of the West (Margaret Hamilton) attempting to remove the Ruby Slippers from Dorothy's (Judy Garland) feet only to get zapped by their magic. The painting is mounted on a rigid backing accentuating the holes drilled in the metal created to relieve pressure from the wind. Artwork measures 18" x 24" (outer frame dimensions are 33" x 39"). A remarkable piece of art created from one of the most recognized monuments of the 20th century. Similar Bill Mack Hollywood Sign paintings routinely sell in the $50,000 range, with larger examples realizing in excess of $100,000. Mack is celebrated for his artwork depicting Hollywood's golden age painted on these historical metal panels, and this is a particularly striking example. Comes with a COA from Bill Mack.
