Description

Marilyn Monroe, "Red Velvet," Nude Poses, for "Golden Dreams" Calendar, May 1949, Original 35mm Color Transparencies (6) by Tom Kelly Studios. Vintage 35mm color transparencies on ANSCO film in original mount (originally produced from 8" x 10" format camera with Kodachrome color film transparency) of Marilyn Monroe, May 27, 1949, of "Red Velvet," Nude Poses #1, #2, #5, #6, #9 for "Golden Dreams" Calendar, 1952, and black lace teddy overlay from Pose #1, for "The Lure of Lace" Calendar, 1955, by Tom Kelly Studios, with PROCESSED BY / PAVELLE COLOR and ANSCO COLOR stamped on the mount. Reproduced for "Golden Dreams" calendar, 1952, and in 1st issue of Playboy magazine, December 1953, pp. 17-18. David O. Selznick and Samuel Goldwyn retained Kelley to shoot promotional photos of their stars and starlets for magazine content and advertising. Monroe posed nude for Kelly on red velvet and was paid $50, signing the release as 'Mona Monroe.' Kelley received only small payments when he sold the reproduction rights to two shots to the Baumgarth Calendar Company and Western Lithograph Company. In 1953, Hugh Hefner purchased the rights from Baumgarth to reproduce the "Golden Dreams" photograph of Pose #1 as the first centerfold in the first issue of Playboy magazine, which launched the franchise. The 8" x 10" transparency remains in the Playboy Archives. Excellent. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.

"It's not true I had nothing on, I had the radio on." (Marilyn Monroe, quoted in Time magazine, 1952)
