Description
Myra Breckinridge (TCF, 1970), Mae West "Letitcia Van Allen" Pair of Costume Sketches by Edith Head. Vintage original pair of Myra Breckinridge (1970) costume sketches of Leticia Van Allen (Mae West) by legendary costume designer Edith Head. West came out retirement to play this part. Although Theadora Van Runkle is the only credited designer for the film, Head exclusively designed West's costumes as a favor to her old-time Paramount friend. Both designs are executed on 8.5" x 11" paper which have been attached to 15" x 20" artboards. One is a white coat with black frog appliqué closures, paired with a turban and scarf as noted in the production notes. However, the on-screen version features a large black fur hat and a long black fur stole draped over one shoulder. West wears this outfit in a scene with 'Stud' (a young Tom Selleck). This sketch is signed by Head, with copious production notes written on sketch itself, and some on the artboard, and 2- heavy white satin swatches are stapled onto the artboard. The second sketch is for a coral beaded full-length gown worn by West's character during a TV spectacular. The production notes indicate it is to be made with "coral, crystal and 'diamond' glitter" which coincides with the onscreen gown. Additional notes are written on the artboard below. Unsigned. Exhibiting age and production handling, including marginal toning to boards, and uniform toning throughout actual sketches, plus general rubbing and scuffing from production use and storage. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.Heritage Auctions provides as much information as possible but strongly encourages in-person inspection.
