Description
What a Way to Go! (TCF, 1964), Shirley MacLaine "Louisa May Foster" Costume Sketch of Silver-Blue Ball Gown by Edith Head. Vintage original What a Way to Go! (1964) costume sketch accomplished in gouache, graphite and ink on 14" x 16.5" artist's paper by legendary costume designer Edith Head. The illustration depicts a full-length Louisa May Foster (Shirley MacLaine) wearing a silver-blue gown with crystals and bugle beads. This design is worn onscreen when MacLaine's character makes an entrance with current husband Rod Anderson (Robert Mitchum) for the "Lush Budgett" ball sequence. The sketch was signed once by Edith Head during the design process then subsequently signed a second time, and other production notations describe how gown should be worn. The image of MacLaine wearing this gown appears on many (if not all) of the original US release posters. Head was nominated for this film for an Oscar in Best Costume Design - Color. Exhibiting noticeable age and production handling, including crinkling and soiling at corners and margins.
