Description
Pocket Full of Miracles (United Artists, 1961), Hope Lange "Queenie" Pair of Costume Sketches by Edith Head. Vintage original pair of Pocket Full of Miracles (1961) costume sketches accomplished in gouache, graphite and ink on 13" x 16" and 13" x 17" artist's paper by legendary costume designer Edith Head. Both illustrations feature Queenie Martin (Hope Lange): one in a red dressing robe, the other showing a reverse view of a pink ball gown. A production note on the red robe sketch calls for a "flame test." In the final film, the robe-worn during the scene in which Queenie's father's IOUs are burned-appears as a satiny lavender pajama set. Head and the art director chose this color to better reflect the flames on screen than the darker red originally sketched. The on-screen version of the pink ball gown was also altered, simplified without the bows on the back, and rendered in ivory. The red robe sketch is signed by Head with a circled "ok", while the pink ball gown sketch is initialed "EH" with the same "ok". Head was nominated for this film for an Oscar for Best Costume Design, Color. Exhibiting age and production handling, including slight substrate waving from original application of water-based pigments.
