Description
I Could Go on Singing (United Artists, 1963), Judy Garland "Jenny Bowman" Pair of Costume Sketches of Red Outfits with Coat and Jacket by Edith Head. Vintage original pair of I Could Go on Singing (1963) costume sketches accomplished in gouache, graphite and ink on 14" x 16.5" artist's paper by legendary costume designer Edith Head. Illustrations depict red outfits worn in film by Jenny Bowman (Judy Garland). One illustration features a red suit trimmed in black fur, in a typical Garland stance, with various production notes including upper right "Garland #2/ fix at test/ 2nd version". Head's signature is at the lower right, with "OK test". The second sketch has the red coat/dress/hat ensemble which appears onscreen. Along the left side, Head has written: "Jenny/ does have hat on boat?/ test length," and at the bottom right, a production note reads: "loose fit at bottom so easy move on boat." On-screen, Garland wears the outfit during a boat excursion with her son. All outfits were created in California and shipped to England where the filming took place. Judy gained weight in the time between fittings and filming, so some outfits were altered, others were replaced. The onscreen red coat/dress does indeed look like the original design. Exhibiting age and production handling, including slightly uneven top margin trim.
