Description
Jeff Beck, Jethro Tull, Canned Heat, B.B. King 1969 Day-Glo Concert Poster. An original thick-paper large advertising poster for four highly important and successful acts from the late 60's: the Jeff Beck Group with Rod Stewart, Jethro Tull, Canned Heat and blues legend B.B. King playing at a roller rink in Alexandria, Virginia. The foursome were divided over two shows on Sunday, February 16 and Saturday, March 1, 1969. The brilliant, beautiful florescent artwork was done by Dail Beeghly, an unsung but very popular concert-poster artist of the era. He usually worked in tandem with area promoter Durwood Settles, and together they produced some incredibly memorable posters, this being one of them. First-time Heritage offering. Measures 23" x 29" and grades to Very Good condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.More Information: A remarkably attractive poster, just one example of why Dail Beeghly quietly rose to the forefront of late-60's concert-poster designers who straddled the line between psychedelic and just plain outrageously creative and colorful. In fact, he even named his little shop "Creative Signs." It's just a shame that his designs were never used as "tour blanks"... that is, for more than one show (or two, in this case). A good example is Beeghly's famous Jimi Hendrix Experience concert poster from Maryland's Merriweather Post Pavilion in August 1968. Beeghly was also tasked with designing the poster for Jimi's very next night in Atlanta, Georgia, for which he created an entirely different poster rather than carry over his Merriweather masterpiece to the next night.
The poster's graphics strike a nice balance using the five men from Canned Heat across the top left and guitar god Jeff Beck's face four times across the top right. Notice all four musicians' names are in entirely different fonts, and the playfulness of the alternating light and dark orange coloring throughout is terrifically eye-catching.
Canned Heat may not seem like a biggie today, but there's no question they were one of the world's hottest blues-rock live bands in the late 60's. A producer who once listened to every inch of live tape from the three-day Woodstock festival has told us that Canned Heat and Sly & the Family Stone were the two best, most exciting performers of the whole festival. Never mind that their "Going Up the Country" plays a key early role in the soundtrack to the Woodstock movie. At this juncture, Bob Hite & company were coming off two straight Top 20 albums: Boogie with Canned Heat and Living the Blues.
The Heat's opener, B.B. King, was the ultimate blues road warrior of course, and this was the year he'd release his biggest hit and signature song, "The Thrill Is Gone." That song ended up winning B a couple of Grammy Awards, and nicely boosted his live-appearance fee in the early 70's.
Rod Stewart is not mentioned on the poster, but he was very much the lead singer for the Jeff Beck Group in 1969, who at this point were halfway between the release of Truth and Beck-Ola, two LPs that enjoyed great exposure on FM underground radio in the day. You can be sure that "I Ain't Superstitious," "Beck's Bolero" and some Yardbirds chestnuts were played at these shows.
Notice the date of the Beck shows was Saturday, March 1. That's the exact date of Billboard magazine that England's Jethro Tull first entered the Top LPs chart with their debut offering, This Was. This show would have featured the classic early line-up of Ian Anderson plus Martin Barre on guitar, Glenn Cornick on bass and Clive Bunker on drums. Recording of their sophomore effort Stand Up would commence the following month.
Condition details: Much creasing around the four edges, especially in the upper right of the artwork which breaks color in the blue from a vertical crease which is a foot long but much in the white margin. The corners all took a good hit with dinging, creasing, light tape residue or a small amount of paper missing (lower left corner). Quarter-inch edge tear at the top above "P" in "Person," and a three-quarter-inch edge tear to the right of "Fairfax" in the lower right corner. Light soiling and bumping damage on lower center edge under "Durwood Settles." The best news is, the center Day-Glo color artwork remains completely bright and vibrant with only the aforementioned upper-right creasing.
