Description

Witness for the Prosecution (Paramount, 1957), Marlene Dietrich "Christine Vole" Pair of Costume Sketches by Edith Head. Vintage original pair of Witness for the Prosecution (1957) costume sketches accomplished in gouache, graphite and ink on 14" x 17" artist's paper by legendary costume designer Edith Head who was brought on to the project to exclusively design the costumes for Marlene Dietrich. The two sketches depict a suit worn by Christine Vole (Dietrich), wife of Leonard Vole (Tyrone Power). In the film, she wears a gray suit when first meeting her husband's defense attorney-matching one of the sketches. The other sketch shows an earlier green version with a coordinated coat. Duplicate production notes appear on this sketch, reading 'try grey alt' at the top left and 'not in green, try in grey' at mid-right. An 'X' across the sketch indicates it was rejected. This green version is signed by Edith Head in the lower left. The gray sketch, which reflects the final on-screen version-a traditional jacket and skirt suit without a coat-is unsigned. Exhibiting age and production handling with rough losses to both top margins from previous staple-mount removal, and faint dampstaining along one lower margin with light tearing in green sketch in top right corner. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.
