Description
Fredric March "Jekyll/Hyde" Ornate Lamp from the Miriam Hopkins "Ivy Pearson" Strangling Scene in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (Paramount, 1931). Vintage original elaborate standing floor gas lamp constructed of chased metal globes and shafts of brass, copper, steel and hand crafted and vividly glazed ceramic sections in colorful, exotic bird motif. The entire construction measures 55.25" tall and 13.5" round at the claw-footed zinc base. Clearly visible in "Ivy's" (Hopkins) room in the horrific scene when "Mr. Hyde" (March) murders her. In the classic horror movie genre, on-set relics are as hard to find as the Frankenstein monster's neck bolts, so this screen-matched set piece is an incredible find. Frederic March playing the dual role of "Jekyll" and "Hyde" earned the very first "Best Actor" Oscar for a horror movie. The lamp has been converted from a working gas lamp, however, there are no electronics or mechanisms present. The interior appears never to have contained oil or fuel of any kind. Exhibiting expected patina, production wear and age. This lamp comes directly from Paramount Studios and was gifted to Assistant Director, UPM, and Producer, Mel Efros in the 1980s when the studio downsized the Prop Department. In vintage Very Good to Fine condition. From the collection of Mel Efros. Accompanied by an LOA from Mr. Efros. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.Heritage Auctions provides as much information as possible but strongly encourages in-person inspection.
