Description
Get Smart (CBS TV 1965-1970), Stereophonic Prop Pistol. Vintage original "stereophonic" prop gun as seen in the hit spy satire sitcom Get Smart, consisting of rigid cast resin components expertly assembled, studio-painted, and finished to appear as a double-barreled pistol with two revolvers connected by a center cylinder and sharing a single central grip and trigger. In Season 4, Episode 16, "The Day They Raided the Knights", the Stereophonic Pistol is introduced as a deadly new invention of KAOS, the evil international organization and main foe of CONTROL, the espionage group that the show's main protagonist, Maxwell Smart (Don Adams), works for. Promising Smart to be the first "recipient of two bullets from KAOS's new Stereophonic Pistol", the trigger is pulled by a Kaos agent, only for cheery muzak to start playing. As it turns out, the manufacturers who built the device interpreted "stereophonic" literally - and the gun triggers a soft jingle rather than fire bullets. Props like this one were both distinctive to and archetypal of the series, with prop devices running the gamut from phones built into the soles of shoes to giant Swiss army knives to invisible chalk. No double entendre or layered pun was left unturned throughout the Emmy-winning series' five seasons and nearly 140 episodes. Item exhibits production use and wear with right barrel loose, trigger loose and showing signs of previous glue repair, and some paint loss. Measuring 9.5" x 4.5" x 6". Originally acquired from Ellis Mercantile, the legendary Hollywood prop house that created and supplied the props for the series. Provenance: Profiles in History, Auction 96, "2018 Hollywood", December 11, 2018, Lot #1126. Exhibited: SPY-FI Exhibit, C.I.A., Langley, VA, 2000-2001. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.
