"Captain James T. Kirk" significant screen-worn costume worn by William Shatner in Season 3, Episode 10, "Plato's Stepchildren of Star Trek: The Original Series. This historic episode is known for the early and controversial on-screen kiss broadcast on scripted television between "Lieutenant Uhura" and "Kirk". This red and gold basket weave Grecian chiton tunic and baldric with Greek key "meander" design with metallic gold belt and interlocking gold foil trim. This is the ONE AND ONLY TUNIC Kirk wore when he kissed Uhua in TV's most memorable interracial kiss. Though created for the small screen, William Theiss' costumes are celebrated for having been constructed at a level of couture not merely decorative but beautiful and functional. The complexity and allure of fabrics such as this are the high-water marks for costume design in television production. This tunic was exhibited among The Original Series props, costumes, and model miniatures at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC. as part of the 25th Anniversary celebration, which attracted over 880,000 visitors, making it the most highly attended exhibit in the museum's history.
