Description

Petticoat Junction (CBS TV, 1963-1970), Hooterville Filming Miniature Train Station. Vintage original filming miniature Hooterville train station and platform from Petticoat Junction, consisting of a wooden base with a depot, railroad crossing sign, and buggy cart, all constructed out of wood, expertly painted and finished, and with miniature components including milk jugs and postage parcels, and hand-painted signage to the depot reading "HOOTERVILLE / ELEV. 1427" "MAGNETIC / TELEGRAM OFFICE" and "RAILROAD CROSSING / LOOK OUT FOR THE CARS". The train station was the only conveyance between Hooterville and the Shady Rest Hotel, where the main characters of the series lived and worked, and thus a seminal part of the popular sitcom, Petticoat Junction, which centered around a vintage 1890s steam-driven locomotive called the Hooterville Cannonball. The series was an essential part of the trend of rural sitcoms that flourished on network television in the 1960s, and in fact existed within the same fictional universe as another beloved example of these shows, The Beverly Hillbillies (CBS TV, 1962-1971). This trend lasted until the early 1970s, when these shows and others like them were abruptly canceled by CBS in what has become to be known as the "rural purge". Train station components are professionally mounted onto a vintage original dark wooden board measuring 20.5" x 14.25", with height from the depot building measuring 5.5" at apex. Depot also contains untested electric wiring for internal miniature electronics. Exhibiting expected signs of wear and age, but overall presenting very nicely with rich, vintage patina to paint. Provenance: Heritage Auctions, "The Comisar Collection", June 2-4, 2023, Lot #89361. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions. From The Stewart Berkowitz Television Treasures Collection.
