Description
It's Howdy Doody Time: A 40-Year Celebration (NBC TV, 1987), Lew Anderson "Clarabell the Clown" Signature Costume. Original (2) piece clown's costume consisting of polyblend coveralls with white and green tiger stripes, ruffled cuffs and ankles, and front full-length zipper and hook-and-eye closure at rounded collar, and (1) yellow chintz-like ruffle collar with Velcro closure to complete the look. Clarabell the Clown was an essential character on the long-running children's series The Howdy Doody Show, initially played by Bob Keeshan (who would go on to create and star in Captain Kangaroo), and then by Robert Nicholson, and finally by Lew Anderson, the steward of this iteration of Clarabell's costume. This ensemble was worn for It's Howdy Doody Time, the 40th anniversary broadcast of The Howdy Doody Show that took place in 1987 and starred regulars including Anderson, Nicholson, and Buffalo Bob Smith. Exhibiting production age and wear including some staining to the coveralls and color fading and staining to the chintz collar. Accompanied by a copy of the catalog from the auction at which this item was originally purchased by the consignor. Provenance: Leland's, "The Howdy Doody Auction", October 24, 1997, Lot #1.
