Description

Personal book-bound script for Captain Newman, M.D. (Universal, 1963). Vintage original 147-page revised final screenplay with blue revision pages dated to February 18, 1963. Screenplay by Richard L. Breen, adapted from the 1961 novel by Leo Rosten. The present script was custom-bound for Mr. Peck's personal library in dark green leatherette with title and Mr. Peck's name stamped in gilt on the front board. Spine stamped in gilt with five raised bands. Marbled endpapers. With 40 gelatin silver glossy double-weight 7" x 9" production stills from the film tipped to pages bound-in. Some light scratches to the lower rear board. Very Fine.

The film was adapted from the novel by Leo Rosten, which was loosely based on the experiences of Rosten's friend, Dr. Ralph Greenson, who pioneered research into the association of posttraumatic stress disorder, many years before that terminology was ever developed, with wartime experiences. After the war, Dr. Greenson became a director of the Los Angeles Psychoanalytic Institute and his patients included Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis, and Vivien Leigh. The film received Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actor, Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium, and Best Sound.

Please note that while not a studio presentation script, the present script was custom bound for Mr. Peck's personal library and features his name stamped in gilt on the front board.
