James J. Jeffries was called the "Great White Hope" by Jack London, who appealed to him to fight Jack Johnson for the heavyweight crown in 1910, billed as the "Fight of the Century". Jeffries defended his World Heavyweight Championship against Tom Sharkey at the Coney Island Athletic Club, New York City, 3rd November 1899, a rematch of their May 6, 1898 heavyweight championship bout.
