Description
James Brown 1969 Macon, GA Jumbo Globe Concert Poster. An original cardboard advertising window card for "Mr. Dynamite," James Brown, appearing in Macon, GA on Friday, April 11, 1969. A dramatic artistic rendering of the Hardest Working Man in Showbiz adorns this poster, using green & black and action lines all around him. This was a homecoming show of sorts; Brown wasn't born in Macon, but he lived there from 1955 to 1963, when he rose from obscurity to the biggest soul singer on the planet. And what a year 1969 was for the Godfather of Soul... James charted 10 singles on Billboard magazine's R&B chart that year, with nine of them crossing over to the pop chart as well. Those would including two #1 R&B hits, "Give It Up or Turnit a Loose" and "Mother Popcorn."
Measures 22" x 28" and grades to Good Plus for a number of condition issues. The bottom edge of the board appears to be an uneven cut, with the vertical measurement on the right side being 1/8" shorter than the left side. This would be very unusual for Globe Posters to put out a poster with quality control this poor, but we can't say for certain that it was trimmed. But you can see the very tops of other letters in the white margin in the lower left which may have been part of more inches below this. It's very hard to say, because 22 x 28" was also a very standard size for Globe.
Notice also a good tear and piece of board missing at the bottom under "Band," and the tip of the lower left corner is missing. There are various and sundry staple and pin holes throughout the poster, sometimes the staples leaving more damage than just holes. The margins are somewhat dirty on both sides and across the top. And on the verso, there is light green handwriting. COA from Heritage Auctions.
