Description
Beatles Yesterday and Today Mono Butcher Cover Early Production Test Slick. A beautiful slick of the notorious album cover, obtained from the printer by a music industry insider at the right time and place when the cover was "killed". Released in 1966, it was the last Beatles album to be created exclusively for the US market by Capitol Records without the group's direct consent. What should have been a routine album was graced with a cover depicting the quartet in butcher smocks and handling raw meat and dismembered baby dolls. Initially, Capitol Records' art department went along with the gag and approved a print run of the album, but negative reactions from record chain buyers and DJs forced Capitol to reconsider and a new, tamer photo replaced the original cover. Due to the last minute change, the album ended up as the only US Beatles' album to show a loss on Capitol's books. This early production test slick was produced by the printer (Queens Lithograph in New York) in very small quantity specifically for the examination of color and print quality. Note that while the slick itself has been cropped to represent the final album size, the image is not cropped as much as the album image itself.
Much rarer than the common Butcher Cover slicks that folks at Capitol Records had available to them to give out in greater quantities and which contained the full album cover text with the image. The 12.75" x 12" slick is in Very Fine to Excellent condition with some very mild wear and discoloration along the edges. This and the Stereo version we're offering are truly rare items! Accompanied by an LOA from the original owner.
