Description

A Groucho Marx Collection of Handwritten 'Notes to Self," Circa 1960s. Approximately ten different documents (some include multiple pages) that the comedian himself annotated in either pencil, ballpoint ink, or felt-tip ink including: 1) a page torn from a datebook listing miscellaneous things like "orange / Napoleon / Goodwill tour," etc.; 2) three pages of notes reading in part "Zeppo replaced me / Chico toilet paper / Harpo re harp teacher / Houdini / Marilyn Monroe low cut," etc.; 3) one page of a story reading in part "notes made 1 hour after sitting;" 4) one page of notes penned on 'Hotels Ambassador Chicago' letterhead reading in part "Barrymore- Harpo / never had any complaints yet / Houdini," etc.; 5) one page of notes on 'Groucho Marx' letterhead reading in part "ugly kid / banana for monkey / put clothes on top of mine," etc.; 6) one page of notes penned on 'St. Regis-Sheraton-New York' letterhead reading in part "people don't listen," etc. (some notes are in another hand); 7) 13 pages of notes about a "cabinet;" 8) one page torn from a datebook reading in part "mother / going to Drs / Maralyn Monroe [sic] / he's dead at present / Laurel & Hardy / Spencer Tracey [sic]," etc.; 9) one page reading in part "in the presence of and with the approval and assistance of Carrington...;" and 10) one page reading in part "she did not move around," etc.; most appear to be notes or reminders for interviews or talk shows though some are ideas for comedy sketches.
