Description
Joan Baez 1961 New York City Concert Poster Designed by Eric Von Schmidt. An original concert poster made on cardstock for the up-and-coming queen of folk, Joan Baez, sharing the stage with bluegrass legends Earl Scruggs & Lester Flatt for a pair of concerts in one evening. The shows took place at the Fashion Institute of Technology on West 27th Street in New York City on Sunday, January 15, 1961.The shows were presented by Baez's management in Boston, where she had her earliest commercial success. At this early stage in her career, the folkie had just one album out on Vanguard Records, Joan Baez, consisting of mostly traditional songs such as "House of the Rising Sun," "East Virginia" and "Fare Thee Well (10,000 Miles)."
The poster was designed by Eric Von Schmidt, whose tiny credit is just below the angel with a horn. Interesting that this was four years before Von Schmidt designed the famous Joan Baez poster with Bob Dylan, which the hobby knows well (and we have in this auction).
Notice the night's co-presenter was "C.R. Rothschild," meaning Charlie Rothschild, from whose archives this one specimen was found.
Measures 10 1/2" x 17 1/8" and grades to Very Good condition. There are thumbtack holes in each corner, with the attendant 'halos' left behind. The lower left corner has three diagonal creases which break the brown color. The poster's top edge has two scratches coming down to the upper right of the oval which also break the brown color. The verso is very toned, with a squiggly stain up in the top portion. From the Archives of Charlie Rothschild. COA from Heritage Auctions.
Charlie Rothschild is a music manager with a career that spanned decades. In his early career, Charlie booked musical acts at Gerde's Folk City in Greenwich Village, most notably Bob Dylan in September 1961, Dylan's first paid gig in New York City. He went on to work for renowned manager Albert Grossman (Dylan, Peter, Paul & Mary, Janis Joplin). As a manager, touring manager and concert promoter himself, Charlie worked alongside folk and rock 'n' roll greats Bob Dylan, the Velvet Underground, Gordon Lightfoot, Judy Collins, Peter, Paul & Mary, Allen Ginsberg, Ian & Sylvia, The Clancy Brothers, Odetta, The Fugs and Pearls Before Swine, among others. Charlie also ran the storied 1960's New York City music venue Balloon Farm, before going out on his own in 1972.
