Description

Larry McMurtry Group of (8) 1990s Unproduced Script Archive for All My Friends are Going to Be Strangers, Plus Produced Teleplay Entitled Montana (Zoetrope/HBO, 1990). Original (8) draft-variations for the unproduced proposed film of All My Friends Are Going to Be Strangers, a 1972 American novel by Larry McMurtry. Dating between Dec 1991 and mid-1994, most credited to Polly Platt from McMurtry's novel, most are studio or agency mimeos, and a few are agency xerox. (3) in simple titled wraps, rest with cover/title page self as interior. The work, his fifth novel, follows the travails and romantic entanglements of a young writer, Danny Deck. The events of the novel primarily take place in Houston, Texas and San Francisco, California. McMurtry later wrote it was not until the book was published "that I became convinced that I was a writer and would remain one." He wrote it in five weeks after finishing his fourth novel, Moving On. In 2009 he stated, "The book was then and probably still remains the best entry point to my fiction, mainly because I was too tired to feel in the least self-conscious. I just spewed it out, and never, until now, looked back. All My Friends still reads well." The Miami Herald called it "nearly a great book." Lot also includes a color-correction revised first-draft script for the 1990 Zoetrope/HBO teleplay Montana by McMurtry, written as an original work rather than an existing novel. 105-pages (as paginated) with green revisions, dated March 6, 1988, brad-bound in gray Carolco/Gimbel Productions studio wraps. Also comes with an 8.5" x 11" letter on Carsey-Warner letterhead. Made for TV film stars Gena Rowlands, Richard Crenna, Michael Madsen and Lea Thompson. All scripts exhibit normal handling and age, with occasional tears, markings, and other production use including folds and edgewear. Cumulatively, an important body of neglected work associated with one of the truly great, epic storytellers of the last 60 years. View the expanded description for this lot online at HA.com/7433. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions. From the Estate of Fred Roos.

Reviewing the book for The New York Times, critic Jim Harrison described the novel "is a much more powerful demonstration of this "memorable" aspect in McMurtry's work... It is a desperate and intimidating work and you are liable to finish with relief and then pick it up several days later to see if the man really said what he did". No film version has been made although in 2009 McMurtry wrote "It has been scripted about a dozen times. Musicians, particularly, seem to like it. James Taylor had it under option for a while, as did the Eagles." There was a sequel Some Can Whistle (1989). Some of the characters also appeared in Terms of Endearment and The Evening Star.
