Description

The Cotton Club (Zoetrope, 1984), Group of (3) Screenplay Drafts. Original group of (3) screenplay drafts for Francis Ford Coppola's stylized period piece set in a 1930s Harlem jazz club, including (1) 108-page (as paginated) studio-bound and bradded First Draft, in blue covers, dated April 5, 1983, written by Francis Ford Coppola for "Robert Evans Productions." Affixed to the title page is a notecard reading, "Fred, Francis asked that you get a copy of this just finished script," along with a typewritten "Cotton Club 4/5/83" label wrapped around the front cover. Also included is (1) 110-page (as paginated) bradded "Final Script," dated December 8, 1983, written by Coppola and William Kennedy, featuring rainbow revision pages and 8-additional pages of continuity shooting notes bound into the back and (1) 106-page (as paginated) studio-bound and bradded shooting script with a black cover, dated August 22, 1983. The title page is marked "Fred Roos" and "office copy," and contains 3-sections of rewrites on blue paper affixed at the top left corner, dated 8/16, 9/6, and 9/15 of the same year. The Cotton Club continued Coppola's tumultuous 1980s career, marked by a mix of critical acclaim and financial struggles. Despite their volatile relationship following The Godfather, producer Robert Evans brought Coppola back for this ambitious and visually striking production. The film featured standout performances from Gregory Hines, Laurence Fishburne, and Diane Lane, and remains one of the few major depictions of Harlem's jazz scene during the Prohibition era. The scripts exhibit expected wear from use and age, including extensive rodent damage to the blue revision pages, a significant stain on the shooting script's cover page, bumped corners, creasing, and general handling wear consistent with on-set use and office circulation. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions. From the Estate of Fred Roos.
