Spock, Messiah! A Star Trek Novel (Bantam, 1976), Pair of Preliminary Concept Cover Artwork by Eddie Jones. Original pair of preliminary artworks on 8.25" x 5.5" artist's paperboard. Created as concept art for the cover of Spock, Messiah! by Theodore R. Cogswell and Charles A. Spano, Jr., with (1) depicting Spock (Leonard Nimoy) surrounded by floating planets against an intense orange and red background, with text at the bottom reading "ROUGH 2 - 'SPOCK MESSIAH' - TERRA PAPERBACK", with a leaf sheet taped to the verso and overlapping to cover the artwork, and (1) depicting Spock in the left corner with a Starfleet starship and futuristic city behind him, with text at the bottom reading "ROUGH 1 - 'SPOCK MESSIAH' - TERRA PAPERBACK". Spock, Messiah! was the second tie-in novel for adults based on the original television series, following Spock Must Die! by James Blish (Bantam, 1970). These designs were ultimately not used for the cover of the paperback, though bear similarities to the final art and contain the characteristics of works by Eddie Jones, a science fiction illustrator who was commissioned frequently throughout the 1970s to produce artwork for novel tie-ins, serialized stories, and foreign publications inspired by the original series. Both exhibit light scuffing and edge wear consistent with age and handling. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.
