Description
Forbidden Planet (MGM, 1956), United Planets Crew Uniform Ensemble. Vintage original (5) piece United Planets crewman's ensemble from the seminal science fiction movie Forbidden Planet, including (1) dove gray polyblend tunic with signature tufted front V-panel and integral padded back and shoulder yoke affixed with snap ends to front chest, bib stay with hook-and-eye fasteners, and asymmetrical hidden zipper front closure, retaining internal MGM bias label handwritten "Robt. Dix", (1) pair of matching pants with zipper and hook-and-eye front closure, retaining internal MGM bias labels handwritten "Robt. Dix" and "671-4492 3234" with additional MGM costumer's tags, (1) utility belt constructed of a 3.5" piece of leather with a thinner 1.5" strip layered on top and a metallic belt buckle with the signature United Planets insignia, all painted a futuristic silver color, retaining internal handwritten "Boyett", (1) crewman's gray polyblend cap with faux leather and webbed internal headband, retaining internal handwritten "Fred", and (1) gray polyblend short-sleeved officer's shirt with zipper front closure, 2-chest pockets, and sewn-on epaulettes, retaining internal MGM laundry tag and handwritten "Anderson" and stamped "42". As such, the ensemble offered here comprises costume components from various characters in the film, including Chief Quinn (Richard Anderson) and Crewman Grey (Robert Dix), along with another uncredited Crewman (William Boyett). The name marked inside the polyblend cap may be from its use in a later production, as certain MGM costume pieces were reused for subsequent productions. Silver paint to the belt may also have been applied during a later production. Items exhibit expected signs of production use, age, and wear, including toning to the tunic and pants with some thread pulls to the tunic, shape loss to the officer's cap from storage, some paint loss and cracking to the leather on the utility belt, and heavy soiling to Anderson's short-sleeved shirt. Overall presenting very nicely, offering a rare ensemble of original components from the beloved film.
