Description
Group of Unpublished Manuscripts and an Unfinished Screenplay Draft by Oja Kodar with Orson Welles Edits and Annotations (ca. 1970s). Vintage original group of (7) unpublished manuscripts written by Oja Kodar with input and annotations made by Orson Welles. Including (1) untitled screenplay draft for Orson Welles and Oja Kodar's incomplete co-adaptation of The Honorary Consul by Graham Greene, approx. 60-pages, with a handwritten note on the front in red marker in Welles' hand reading, "Terry: keep exactly this order" followed by a typewritten note by Welles stipulating directions for making copies of the enclosed script with typewritten sign off "Thanks / OW", pages unbound and stored in an acrylic safety folder, (1) manuscript for an "erotic story" entitled "Somebody Else", 61-pages (as paginated) on mimeographed pages and bound in a yellow folder, (2) manuscripts for "Blind Window" typewritten in blue marble wraps, both 239-pages (as paginated) and 1-with a handwritten note reading "OW has corrected to this point" on page 24, (1) manuscript for "Arizona Story", 172-pages (as paginated) and typewritten in marble wraps with handwritten notes, page-numbers, and whiteout edits, in a blue spring-back binder, and (2) manuscripts for "Crazy Weather", unpaginated but counting several hundred pages, 1-mimeographed copy in light green marble wraps and 1-mimeographed with a smattering of handwritten notations, several appearing to be in Welles' hand, unbound in an original thick manila envelope with handwritten "Crazy Weather" in black ink on the front. Also included is 1-handwritten page for potential character names relating to "Crazy Weather" in Welles' handwriting. Welles and Kodar began an affair in the early 1960s, having met during production of The Trial (Astor, 1962). Their creative and romantic relationship continued until Welles's death in 1985, despite Welles' marriage to Paola Mori. There materials offer a rare glimpse into the working relationship between the two. Items exhibit expected signs of handling, wear, and age, including bumped corners, edgewear, adhesive reside, smudging, creases, and stains. Unbound materials have not been rearranged. Provenance: From the collection of Orson Welles' personal assistant in the mid-1970s, Terry Putz.
